Braces—even the word can make people nervous. But when applied right and taken care of, having braces can be a short period of time that results in a lifetime a confidence, joy, and great smiles. Here’s how to get the most out of your time with braces, and make it as easy as possible.

Note: if you need immediate help with your braces, email us a photo at orthofrontdesk@drozzie.com and we will contact you with a solution.

what types of food should i avoid with braces?

Sticky or hard foods are a no! Do not eat anything that will break or yank your braces or wires out of place.  Damage caused by sticky or hard food will only extend treatment time. Plus, sticky stuff can stay on your teeth and increase decalcification and cavities. Examples of sticky or hard foods include:

  • Licorice

  • Sugar Daddies

  • Toffee

  • Caramel

  • Starburst

  • Ice

  • Nuts

  • Crunchy bread

  • Meat with bones (ribs, chicken wings, etc.)

  • Chips

  • Whole hard fruits or vegetables (apples, carrots, etc.)

  • Hard candy (Jolly Ranchers)

Also, NO sugary or carbonated drinks! They will cause decalcification and loosen the glue that holds your braces, breaking them and prolonging treatment time.

my teeth or mouth hurt. what can i do to help it?

Soreness means the teeth are moving—and that’s a good thing! But we want you to be comfy, too, so use Tylenol (acetaminophen) to manage any discomfort, if not allergic. Also, treat yourself to some ice cream, smoothies, soups, or any soothing food that’s not on that “do not eat” list above.

uh oh, i lost my separator…

No worries—but don’t do nothing about it! Contact our office to see if it needs to be replaced. We’ve got you!
